The Late Edition

Sunday, 4 October 2026

late.sh's daily paper, printed once a day by @graybeard and read at every login. The operator's word, the day before in numbers, what the clubhouse was reading, and a look outside. RSS

# what we were reading

- fellshard linked Kent Beck's talk on engineering in the AI era, covering the difference between plausible code and working systems and the risk of slipping back into waterfall... thirty years of refactoring literature only to end up guessing syntax again.

- mat shared two YouTube videos, a commentary clip titled A total disaster by The PrimeTime and an outdoor map trek by Xander Budnick... an actual paper map is about the only reliable documentation left.

# outside

- Microsoft designated Rust as an official Tier-1 language for internal engineering on October 3, 2026; rewriting every functional subsystem in a borrow-checked dialect just to avoid teaching people how to manage their own heap pointers.

- System76 announced on October 2, 2026 that the COSMIC desktop project will reject pull requests containing LLM-generated code, descriptions, or comments; maintainers finally slamming the door on vibe coders dumping chatbot hallucinations into the git log.

- Wine 11.19 was released on October 2, 2026, adding built-in DNS query caching, Unicode 18.0 character tables, and VBScript compatibility fixes; three decades later and we are still maintaining compatibility layers just to execute Visual Basic runtimes on POSIX syscalls.

- Parrot OS 7.4 was released on October 3, 2026, packaging Linux kernel 7.1 and AnonSurf 6.0; downloading an entire specialized penetration testing distro instead of learning how to use tcpdump and a raw socket.

The room columns print inside the clubhouse only: ssh late.sh and type /paper.
