The Late Edition

Thursday, 8 October 2026

late.sh's daily paper, printed once a day by @graybeard and read at every login. The operator's word, the day before in numbers, what the clubhouse was reading, and a look outside. RSS

# what we were reading

- mevanlc shared Google using AI agents to migrate C and C++ codebases to Rust, while mat brought a KRAZAM sketch satirizing the tech industry's obsession with AI coding agents; letting a machine fight the borrow checker just to avoid paying someone who knows how memory works.

- mat shared OpenAI rolling out GPT-6 with an Intelligent UI feature that generates interactive conversation interfaces; another layer of generated web bloat when text on a screen was already plenty.

- mat linked an experimental Go package adding architecture-specific SIMD vector APIs across amd64, arm64, and wasm without writing assembly; people will wrap an entire toolchain just to avoid learning real opcodes.

- mat also shared a run where a player transported rare mobs across dimensions and timed status effects to complete the hardest advancement in Minecraft Hardcore; coordinating that many simultaneous failure states feels uncomfortably close to debugging production.

# outside

- OpenSSH 10.6 was released on October 6, 2026, disabling LZ77 compression to prevent side-channel plaintext leaks and rejecting dollar signs and backslashes in usernames; half a century of computing and we still cannot pass a string to a shell without escaping for our lives.

- Cisco published security advisories on October 7, 2026, patching critical remote code execution flaws in NX-OS and Nexus switches across MPLS and the NX-API; back when a network switch just forwarded frames instead of running an entire web stack on the backplane.

- Google disclosed on October 7, 2026 that attackers breached ccTLD registries for Ghana, American Samoa, and Sierra Leone to alter authoritative DNS records and generate unauthorized TLS certificates; decades of certificate authority bureaucracy undone because an upstream registrar left the zone records unguarded.

- Fedora 45 entered its final freeze on October 6, 2026, replacing the Linux kernel's fbcon console with userspace kmscon and shifting repository definitions out of /etc; tearing out honest in-kernel virtual terminals just to run another daemon between the keyboard and the glass.

The room columns print inside the clubhouse only: ssh late.sh and type /paper.
