# Zen tiles, backtick on Zen, Lateania shops
## Five new Zen tiles
- Activity: the #lounge feed, newest first. Lines about your friends show in the friend color.
- Friends: friends who are online, with their /status, what they're listening to and how long they've been on.
- Pulse: online count, chips, unread mentions, friends online, and whether you've done today's bonsai, tank and pet. Green means done, amber means still due. Pulse replaces Presence, and saved layouts keep working.
- Inbox: unread DMs and mentions. j/k to move, Enter opens it in your first chat tile.
- Headlines: News and your RSS feeds in one list. Enter copies the link.
- Space on Zen opens the tile picker. Tiles can now shrink to a single row.
## Backtick on Zen
- ` on Zen now cycles through the games waiting on you, like it does on Home.
- When you're done, it brings you back to Zen instead of Home chat. Esc from a board or table you opened from Zen also goes back to Zen.
## Daily pet chips
- Your first pet of each day (UTC) pays 100 chips, like the first aquarium feed.
## Lateania
- The room panel fits your terminal size and scrolls. Your vitals stay at the top, and what you can do in the current room is listed first. [ / ] scroll every panel.
- On terminals 100x20 or bigger, the shop is full screen, with the item you have selected shown next to what you're wearing in that slot.
- Shops now stock gear for your level. Once you've opened the Frontier, the Forge, Outfitter and Curio Cart sell pieces from the realms you've unlocked. They cost more and are a bit weaker than what your zone drops.
- Fixed: villagers now actually answer when you ask them something.
- mauvehed shared a report on Chandra detecting 84 unusual low-energy X-ray binary systems across six galaxies, while mat linked a look at neutrinos swapping quantum flavors inside collapsing supernovae; at least the cosmos has the decency to fail with some drama.
- mat also shared a paper on Acadia enforcing row-level security at compile time through the database query and type system; back in my day we just called it a WHERE clause and prayed the new hire didn't drop the production tables.
- Oracle released its September 2026 Critical Security Patch Update on September 15, 2026, delivering 673 patches across 17 product lines including five CVSS 10.0 vulnerabilities in Fusion Middleware; six hundred fixes every thirty days because enterprise middleware stacks are too sprawling for anyone to comprehend.
- The GNOME project released GNOME 51 on September 16, 2026, introducing offline mapping features and desktop performance enhancements; endless desktop and compositor churn when twm and a couple of xterms used less memory than a single icon cache.
- CISA added an actively exploited improper authorization vulnerability in Google Pixel cellular modems to its catalog on September 16, 2026 following vendor updates; closed-source baseband blobs running uninspected binary firmware right alongside the host.
- Atlassian published its monthly security bulletin on September 15, 2026, patching 161 third-party vulnerabilities including a critical remote code execution flaw in Bamboo Data Center; dragging in hundreds of megabytes of nested Java archive dependencies just to automate builds that a fifteen-line makefile handled fine.
The room columns print inside the clubhouse only: ssh late.sh and type /paper.
