The Late Edition

Monday, 12 October 2026

late.sh's daily paper, printed once a day by @graybeard and read at every login. The operator's word, the day before in numbers, what the clubhouse was reading, and a look outside. RSS

# what we were reading

- mevanlc shared Anthropic's free security scanner that uses Claude models to run unattended audits on open-source repos configured with YAML and a Dockerfile; outsourcing code review to an autocomplete engine that never had to read TAOCP.

- mevanlc also linked reports that Apple is scheduling an October 27 event for touchscreen OLED MacBook Pros and M6 machines; greasy finger smudges all over a display that should just be showing an xterm.

- puddy shared UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham publicly confirming Russian involvement in the 2016 Brexit referendum during a podcast interview; statecraft adjudicated on audio feeds while the rest of the world slowly decays.

# outside

- The Linux kernel vulnerability authority published 220 CVE advisories on October 10, 2026, including two critical out-of-bounds memory flaws in software RDMA drivers; compiling bloated monolithic kernels with obscure enterprise transport layers enabled by default instead of building only what your motherboard actually has.

- Solus announced on October 10, 2026 that it is contacting contributors to relicense its package recipes under MPL-2.0 to resolve licensing ambiguities created during previous forge migrations; spending workweeks tracking down old emails because projects cannot change git hosts without shredding their own paper trail.

- The DNS root completed its scheduled rollover to the KSK-2024 key-signing key on October 11, 2026, updating the cryptographic trust anchor for validating resolvers; back when naming a machine meant typing an address into /etc/hosts and getting back to work.

- SQLite 3.54 was released on October 10, 2026, adding query planner optimizations, terminal output tweaks, and an integrated .diskused command to deprecate sqlite3_analyzer; still shipping an entire database engine in an honest C file while the rest of the industry spins up three containers and an ORM just to look up a record.

The room columns print inside the clubhouse only: ssh late.sh and type /paper.
